My FL Studio Is Taking Too Long to Load...
I was in 10th grade, and by that point I'd already been learning FL Studio for a few years; slowly.
I wasn't thinking about computers very much. I was thinking about making music.
At some point, I decided I wanted to work on a laptop instead of my desktop. It made sense to me. I could take it anywhere, open FL Studio whenever I wanted, and keep working without being stuck at a desk.
The only problem was that the laptop was a weaker machine. Less RAM, weaker graphics capabilities, and generally less power to work with.
I didn't really understand why any of that mattered yet.
I just knew FL Studio was taking forever to load.
When the computer gets in the way
There's a particular kind of frustration that comes from having an idea and waiting for your computer to catch up with you.
I'd open a project and wait. Add more plugins and things would get slower. Sometimes the program would freeze, and I would sit there staring at it wondering whether I should touch anything or give it another minute.
And because I didn't know much about computer hardware, I didn't always know what the problem was.
Was FL Studio broken? Was the project too big? Did I install something wrong? Was I doing anything wrong?
That feeling made it more stressful than it should be.
Then years later, especially after getting into filmmaking and working with programs like Adobe Premiere Pro, I realized how much the computer you're working on can affect the creative process.
You don't need to become a computer expert. I certainly am not one.
But there are a few things I wish I'd understood earlier.
The simple version
If you're a music or film student buying a computer, there are three words you're probably going to see constantly: CPU, RAM, and GPU.
Here's how I think about them.
The CPU is the brain doing the work. For music production, this matters a lot. The more instruments, effects, plugins, and processing you're asking your DAW to handle, the more work you're giving the computer.
RAM is your workspace. More RAM gives your computer more room to keep things available while you're working. If you're running FL Studio, a browser with seventeen tabs you swear you need, and other programs at the same time, that workspace starts filling up.
The GPU handles graphics-heavy work. This becomes especially important once you get into filmmaking, editing, effects, color work, and programs like Premiere Pro.
There's also storage. An SSD can make opening programs, loading files, and moving through projects feel much faster than an older, slower drive.
That's basically the level at which I think most students need to understand it at first.
Buy for what you're going to make
The mistake I'd avoid is buying a computer based only on what you need right now.
A beginner FL Studio project might run perfectly fine. Then two years later you're using more demanding plugins, recording more tracks, and building much bigger sessions.
Film gets demanding even faster. You start editing higher-resolution footage, adding effects, color grading, and suddenly the laptop that seemed completely fine for schoolwork sounds like it's preparing for takeoff.
You don't need the most expensive computer available. And having a better computer won't make you a better producer, songwriter, editor, or filmmaker.
But you do want a machine that gets out of your way.
That's what I didn't understand in 10th grade.
I thought the frustration was just part of learning FL Studio. Sometimes I even wondered whether I wasn't good enough at using it yet.
Really, I was learning two things at once: how to make music, and what my computer could actually handle.
If you're a music or film student choosing a computer, learn just enough about the hardware to know what you're asking it to do.
Then get back to making stuff.
